Electrical Settings
& Studies

Do your relay settings still reflect your system as it exists today? When system topology changes, generation comes online, or new equipment is added, protection coordination needs to be reverified. N2 does that work with the rigor it deserves.

What we deliver

Settings that match your system as it actually is.

Relay settings that haven't been reviewed since the system was first built are a liability. When someone adds a capacitor bank, changes transformer tap positions, or extends a feeder, the original coordination may no longer be valid. N2 verifies from the ground up.

Protection coordination studies

Time-current curve analysis ensuring coordinated fault clearing from substation to feeder, with proper selectivity between relay zones.

Short circuit studies

Fault current calculations for three-phase, line-to-ground and line-to-line faults at each bus, verified against equipment ratings.

Relay settings packages

Complete, documented settings files for each relay — formatted for your relay platform and cross-referenced to the coordination study.

Settings verification

Field verification that programmed relay settings match the approved settings package, with documentation of any discrepancies found.

When a study is warranted

  • New relay commissioning requiring initial settings development
  • System topology changes that affect fault current levels or coordination
  • Settings that haven't been reviewed since original installation
  • Misoperations or nuisance trips requiring root-cause analysis
  • Relay replacement projects where settings must be translated to a new platform
  • NERC PRC/FAC compliance obligations and audit support

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

How do I know whether we need a full coordination study or a targeted review?

It depends on how much your system has changed since the last study and whether the original model still exists. Tell us what's changed and we'll give you a straight answer — sometimes a targeted review of a few zones is enough, and we'll say so.

Do we get the study files, or just a report?

You get both. We hand over the coordination and short-circuit models alongside the settings packages so your team, or any engineer you hire later, can rerun the analysis as the system evolves.

Can you develop settings for a relay platform we're moving to?

Yes. Translating settings to a new platform is one of the most common requests we get on relay replacement projects. We develop the new settings from the coordination study rather than transcribing the old ones.

When was your last coordination study?

If you can't remember, it's probably time.

We'll tell you honestly whether a full study is warranted or whether a targeted review is enough.
